TONKAWA Inter Tribal Council of Elders

Our Purpose:
The purpose of the Tonkawa Council of Elders is to improve the quality of life for American Indian/Alaska Native Elders, families and children in the San Diego area in a respectful and traditional manner.  To improve the quality of life we encourage everyone to maintain connection to an active tribal community that supports a healthy tribal identity.  We will help advocate for and improve access to services to ensure the safety and well-being of all our elders so they can fulfill their roles as keepers of our local history, customs and traditions.

As elders we hope for all our Native families to have access to healthcare, education, and all the resources necessary to live with purpose and dignity. We want all our children to grow up feeling strong in their tribal identity and to contribute back to the community as they become elders. We understand that every family has a unique history and relationship to their tribal heritage. We believe every Native descendant has the right to claim their tribal heritage, whether you are from an urban or reservation area.
